How to Get to Acatenango

Getting to the Acatenango trailhead: 21.7 km by road from Antigua to the park entrance near La Soledad, how the tours pick you up, and where the hike starts and ends.

Updated November 2026

You get to Acatenango from Antigua Guatemala. Every hike we compare starts there and drives you to the trailhead at La Soledad, a village on the volcano’s lower slopes; by road it is 21.7 km from Antigua to the park entrance near La Soledad. The simplest way is a hike with hotel pickup, such as Volcano Expeditions’ From Antigua: 2-Day Acatenango Volcano Hiking Adventure, from US$57 a person (checked November 2026), which collects you in Antigua and brings you back to your accommodation.

The calendar shows the pickup details for the date you pick. You can reserve now, pay later and cancel free until 24 hours before.

CONRED restricted the ascent of Acatenango on 4 August 2026, during Fuego’s eruption; operators were selling dates in November 2026 when we checked. Check CONRED and INGUAT before you go.

The first morning

On Volcano Expeditions' hike the bus calls at hotels, then at its station at 8:45 AM, where you get your food, a jacket, gloves and a hat, and can rent a backpack, a flashlight, hiking shoes or poles. Luggage storage is included. Then it drives on to La Soledad, where you meet the local guides and set off after a short briefing.

Reviewers describe the morning in their own terms. A five-star review of 31 May 2026 says the group was picked up at 8 AM, taken to a local school where bags could be stored, and was on the trail by 11 AM. A one-star review of 25 May 2026 complains of an hour at the food and luggage stop and another hour at the trailhead before the walk began. Both are from the 350 newest reviews (8 May to 7 November 2026).

Coming back

On day two you walk down to where you started and the bus takes you back to Antigua: to your accommodation on Volcano Expeditions' hike, and by early afternoon on Acatenango Experience VIP's.

No issuer we found publishes a public bus to La Soledad, so we do not describe one. Every hike we compare includes the ride both ways.
