Which Acatenango Hike from Antigua?
The Acatenango hike is two days on foot from the village of La Soledad, near Antigua Guatemala: up to a base camp on the volcano’s flank, a night there across the valley from Fuego, and a climb to the 3,976 m summit (CONAP, 2008) before dawn. The one to book first is Volcano Expeditions’ From Antigua: 2-Day Acatenango Volcano Hiking Adventure, from US$57 a person (checked November 2026). It picks you up at your hotel, feeds you three times, lends a jacket, gloves and a hat, and gives you the summit as an option on day two. Its guide speaks Spanish; if you need English, look at the second card.

The Climb, the Night and What You Pay
Where the hike goes, how the two days run, what the price covers and what you pay on the mountain, and the other ways up.
Where the hike goes

Acatenango is the taller of a pair of volcanoes south-west of Antigua. Its neighbour to the south is Fuego, 3,763 m, an active volcano that INSIVUMEH, Guatemala’s volcano institute, reports on every day, and the camps on Acatenango look across at it. The tours all start in Antigua and drive to La Soledad, the village where the trail begins; by road it is 21.7 km from Antigua to the park entrance near La Soledad. How to get to Acatenango has the route.
Volcano Expeditions’ two days
On the dates we read the trip started at 8:00 AM, with pickup from your hotel in Antigua. At 8:45 AM the bus stops at Volcano Expeditions’ station, where you are handed your food and a jacket, gloves and a hat, and where you can rent a backpack or a flashlight. Hiking shoes and poles are also for rent before the start.
From La Soledad the climb to base camp takes 4.5 to 6 hours, depending on the group’s pace, with three bathroom stops on the way; bring your own toilet paper. You reach camp in the late afternoon, eat dinner on the volcano and sleep in a sleeping bag on a mat. The shelter is a dome in Volcano Expeditions’ list of inclusions and a cabin in its itinerary.
On the second morning you get up in the dark to reach the summit for sunrise. It is optional: anyone who would rather not climb waits at camp. After breakfast at camp the group walks down to where it started, and the bus takes you back to your accommodation in Antigua.

What the price buys, and what you pay on the mountain
The US$57 buys the round trip from your hotel, the guide, lunch and dinner on day one, breakfast on day two, hot chocolate, the sleeping bag and mat, the loan of a jacket (not waterproof), gloves and a hat, and luggage storage while you are up the mountain. Menus come in normal, vegetarian, vegan and gluten-free versions. On every date we read, one adult paid US$57 and two adults twice that (checked November 2026).
Three things are not in it:
- The park entrance. The Municipalidad de Acatenango charges foreign visitors Q100 (quetzales) a person, Guatemalan nationals Q25 and national students Q10; you get a wristband and a receipt at the gate (checked November 2026). The entrance fee and rules has the detail.
- Water. Bring at least 3 litres a person on Volcano Expeditions’ hike; about half a litre goes on coffee or hot chocolate.
- The extra Fuego trip. Volcano Expeditions sells an “Extra tour to the Fuego Volcano (Q200)” on top. Where that trip goes is not stated. CONRED said on 9 August 2026 that the ascent of Fuego is not authorized.
Other ways up
Tours & Activities SA's Acatenango Volcano Overnight Tour is from US$90 (checked November 2026). Its guide speaks Spanish and English, and you sleep in an A-frame cabin with a mattress and a pillow. It started at 7:30 AM on the January date we read; 27 November showed no availability.
Acatenango Experience VIP's small group is limited to 6, with one guide for six hikers, private transport, its own base camp with cabins and the park fees included. Its from-price of US$170 is each person’s share for two adults; on 10 December, 20 January, 17 February and 10 March one adult alone paid US$295 (checked November 2026).
For a night on the mountain without the long climb, Silverbacks Experiences' 4WD and glamping trip drives most of the way up and leaves a 40-minute walk to a glamping tent, from US$430. It has 9 reviews.
Experience GT's two-day hike includes the entrance fee and two litres of water, from US$135 (checked November 2026). The Acatenango tour companies sets them all side by side.
What reviewers mention
Volcano Expeditions’ hike has 1,786 reviews on GetYourGuide. We read the 350 newest, the oldest dated 8 May 2026 and the newest 7 November 2026: 53 of them give three stars or fewer, and 35 of those 53 have text. The complaints that come up most are about the guides (little explanation, long waits, a pace that left slower hikers behind, Spanish only), the camp (crowded, cold, one with rats where a tent had a hole), the size of the group and too little food. Several reviews, five-star ones among them, tell you to bring more snacks than you think, and two say the day’s food is handed to you to carry up.
Before you book
- Fitness. Volcano Expeditions’ hike needs a good level of fitness and some hiking experience, and is not for children under 11, people over 65, or anyone with heart problems. How hard is the Acatenango hike goes through the climb.
- Language. The guide on Volcano Expeditions’ hike speaks Spanish.
- Cold. It gets very cold at camp at night; bring warm layers. The best time to hike Acatenango covers the season, and the packing list the rest.
- Cancelling. Every GetYourGuide hike here can be cancelled free up to 24 hours before, and you can reserve now and pay later.

Hard. Volcano Expeditions' hike needs a good level of fitness and some hiking experience, the trail can be steep and physically demanding, and it is not for children under 11 or people over 65. From US$57 a person on Volcano Expeditions' two-day hike (checked November 2026). Tours & Activities SA's overnight tour is from US$90, Acatenango Experience VIP's small group from US$170 each for two, and Silverbacks Experiences' 4WD and glamping from US$430. You get a wristband and a receipt at the entrance. Some tours include it and some do not; Volcano Expeditions' hike does not. See the entrance fee and rules.
The camps look across to Fuego, which stands next to Acatenango, but what it does on the night depends on the volcano. INSIVUMEH, Guatemala's volcano institute, publishes a daily bulletin; on 7 November 2026 it recorded three to five explosions an hour. Weather counts too: of the 350 newest reviews of Volcano Expeditions' hike (8 May to 7 November 2026), one of 3 September says the summit was called off after rain in the night, and one of 18 July paid for the extra Fuego trip and saw nothing in the cloud.
No: CONRED said on 9 August 2026 that the ascent of Fuego is not authorized. Staying or camping in the areas called La Meseta and El Camellón is not allowed either (Municipalidad de Acatenango). Several Acatenango listings sell an extra Fuego trip; Volcano Expeditions prices its 'Extra tour to the Fuego Volcano' at Q200. Where that trip goes is not stated.
Check before you go. CONRED restricted the ascent of Acatenango on 4 August 2026, during Fuego's eruption; operators were selling dates in November 2026 when we checked. Check CONRED and INGUAT before you go. Every GetYourGuide hike here can be cancelled free up to 24 hours before.
At least 3 litres of water, warm layers, hiking shoes, a flashlight, snacks and cash. See the Acatenango packing list.
With a tour: every hike here starts in Antigua and drives you to the trailhead at La Soledad. By road it is 21.7 km from Antigua to the park entrance near La Soledad. Volcano Expeditions picks up from hotels in Antigua. See how to get to Acatenango.
